Proposal Requirements
Completion of Playwriting Course is required.
Proposal must include attachment (or a hard copy handed to current SIP Coordinator for Theatre) of draft of play you want to develop.
In addition to the required items for all Theatre Arts preliminary SIP proposals, the playwriting proposal must also include:
- Proposed development:
- Action & Scope/Action & Scope? Different story?
- Add/subtract a theme or issue? Or style? Character development?
- Other?
- Current play’s outline
- Outline of major actions
- List of characters & descriptions
- List of scenes & locations
- Particular writing exercises hoping to explore (character biographies, negotiations, etc.), to be discussed with assigned Adviser after proposal has been accepted.
- Attach completed first (current) draft of play.
Process Guidelines
Although every SIP Adviser may engage with student work slightly differently, the following is what students generally may expect:
- Turning in completed second (or 3rd, or 4th, etc.) draft of their play.
- Completing and including in the written SIP, a “Process” paper, or chapter, or otherwise agreed upon format of:
- Revisit goals
- How the entire process went /worked or did not work
- Specific process of revisions; what changed draft to draft
- Consideration of production requirements
- Self-evaluation
- Where do I go next as a playwright?
- How was this experience a capstone of your educational journey at K?
- Any appendices other than their drafts of their play (Revised bibliography, Journal entries, exercises, other information important to their research/work)
As with ANY Theatre SIP, students are expected to work mostly on their own or with other students, and to take the initiative, the “lead,” with their SIP. Any time clarification, or a pep talk, or guidance is wanted, take the initiative to reach out to Adviser.
All due dates for drafts, check-ins, feedback should be scheduled in advance with Adviser when the Theatre Arts Department SIP contract is signed.
These guidelines may also be used with Independent Studies.
